When the news broke we were skeptical at first. We thought it was just another misinformation but it turns out that everything seems to be true.
Last week-end the internet was buzzing that Buju Banton was arrested after reportedly trying to sell cocaine to an undercover United States Drug Enforcement Agent. They also claim having recordings of the whole deal.
He could spend more than 20 years in Federal prison if the US finds him guilty. He is scheduled to appear in Tampa tomorrow for the first round. Rowe spoke to Jamaica Glearner and said : "I think that if he is intelligent and he approaches the case properly, he could get a result that would not end his career, and that would put him in a position where he might be able, in a relatively short period of time, to come out. This is a very tight affidavit. However, that does not mean that there may not be information that may arise at a later stage which might factually challenge some of the claims that have been made. I expect them to tender the affidavit before a federal grand jury and obtain a grand jury indictment eventually, but this is not good news for Buju Banton and his fans, because it appears he will have to explain a number of factual issues."
Buju who's real name is Mark Myrie is accused of: "knowingly and wilfully conspire and agree with each other and with others unknown to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine".
According to the DEA Special Agent Daniel McCafferi, on December 8th, they received a confidential source that Buju and associates, in Sarasota area of tampa wanted to purchase few kilo of cocaine. They met at a restaurant where they showed Buju and Ian Thomas the quantity.
Daniel McCafferi said: "After viewing the cocaine, Myrie (who allegedly used his tongue to test the cocaine) and Thomas continued to negotiate with the confidential source for them to obtain 15 kilograms of cocaine."
Further more on December 10th, Thomas and James Mack travelled and obtained 7 kilograms and got arrested by law-enforcement agents and handgun was found in a secret compartment of the vehicle they were driving.
On December 10, Thomas and another accused, James Mack, travelled to a facility where they allegedly presented a large quantity of money and were given a bag containing seven kilograms of cocaine. They later arrested Buju who wasn't there at the time the drug deal was final.
Is there anyway out for Buju? Well someonewhat Rowe says : "He could enter a plea and attempt to strike a deal while assuming that the DEA has the evidence that it says it has."
As far as the management? nothing. Sources said that the team and an attorney have discussed with the Jamaican government officials in Florida, but obviously no confirmation.
Also Professor David Rowe mention that no Attorney was retained yet and that before being official they would have to confirm where the money is coming from : "Feelers came to me and other attorneys but no one has yet been retained, and I'm not sure who is acting on his behalf."
As a reminder - Just a few years ago, the well-known Jamaican Star Buju Banton collaborated with Wyclef Jean and T-Vice on a song entitled "Party by the Sea".
